Sourced from Italy, these whole dried juniper berries offer an aromatic flavour that is used to flavour gin and to spice up European cuisine.

Derived from the conifer tree, they have a distinctive bitter, peppery taste. Their flavour and odour is strongest immediately after harvest and declines during the drying process and subsequent storage.

Like all of our products, the dried juniper berries available from us have been carefully sourced, in this case from Italy

History

Gin wouldn’t exist without these little berries! In fact, it’s said that the word ‘gin’ derives from ‘jenever,’ the Dutch word for juniper. Although gin has been around for centuries (since 1550, it’s believed), it’s never been more popular – and this has had a marked impact on the popularity of juniper berries too.

As for the history of juniper berries themselves, this dates back much further still. Native to northern Europe, Asia and North America, it’s thought that they’ve been around at least since Ancient Egyptian times. The Romans’ and Greeks’ use of juniper berries has also been widely documented, although this was predominantly for medicinal purposes rather than as a flavouring as there are many benefits to using them regularly.

General Use

Packed with healthy minerals and ideal for vegan and vegetarian cooking, these all-natural whole dried juniper berries have a whole host of potential uses. They’re most commonly used to flavour gin but are also associated with European cuisine, where they’re regularly used to add a touch of excitement to dishes.

Renowned for their distinctive spicy, peppery flavour, dried juniper berries can be ground down with a pestle and mortar and added to a variety of dishes. Common applications include casseroles, stews, marinades and stuffings, but vegetables and tofu can also benefit from the complementary flavour of juniper berries. Some incorporate the spice into jams and baked goods, while others use it as a rub for meat like pork, venison and beef.

Best ways to use Dried Juniper Berries

• Crush juniper berries and use as a rub for meats to add a bold, earthy flavour.

• Brew juniper berry tea for a soothing and aromatic drink that promotes digestion and relaxation.

• Add dried juniper berries to pickling brine for a tangy and aromatic twist on traditional pickles.

• Grind juniper berries and mix with salt and pepper for a delicious seasoning blend for vegetables.

• Create a juniper berry syrup to drizzle over desserts like ice cream or pancakes for a burst of flavour.

• Use dried juniper berries in potpourri or homemade sachets for a natural and refreshing scent in your home.

Culinary Herbs & Spices
The spicy, aromatic, dark berries of the juniper tree can be used fresh or dried, crushed or whole, to flavour casseroles, stews, marinades, stuffings, tofu and vegetables and complement a wide range of meats, including pork, rabbit, venison and beef. They can also be used in sweet dishes, such as cake and bread.

Brewing & Distilling
Juniper berries are essential for creating the distinctive flavour profile of gin. They provide the main flavouring for this popular spirit, imparting a unique blend of piney, citrusy, and slightly peppery notes. Distillers rely on juniper berries to give gin its signature taste, making them a must-have ingredient in the production process!
