A well-known and highly symbolic plant, heather has been part of the folk medicine world for centuries. Long ago, it was used to make brooms and ropes, to stuff pillows and mattresses, for insulation, and as thatching. It has also found its way into remedies for a variety of ailments over the years, from kidney stones to aching joints, and has been used as a beer-brewing ingredient.

Typically found growing in acidic soils across Europe, heather is an evergreen shrub which dominates heathland and moorland areas all over the continent. It’s also found in Asia Minor and parts of North America. It’s long been associated with Scotland, and its name is believed to have originated from the Scottish term haeddre, meaning heathland.

Health & Beauty
A popular folk remedy dating back centuries, heather has been used as a diuretic to treat urinary tract infections and kidney stones. Other potential uses include the treatment of arthritic joints, diabetes and digestive and circulatory issues.

Brewing & Distilling
In Europe and Ireland, heather has been used for a long time instead of hops to flavour and bitter beer, as well as to flavour tea.
